Abstract
Education serves as the foundation upon which every other sector of the economy depends. This is because no nation can achieve meaningful development without a strong and effective education system, as it equips society with skilled, productive, and knowledgeable citizens. However, in Nigeria, primary or basic education—the bedrock of learning—appears to be neglected despite various government interventions aimed at improving access and quality. The paper emphasized the urgent need to restructure the primary school curriculum to address societal needs and promote quality, sustainable development. It explored key concepts, challenges facing primary education, theoretical perspectives, and strategies for restructuring. Suggested solutions include sensitizing communities, parents, teachers, and learners on issues such as security and poverty; collaborating with organizations like UNICEF and NERDC to develop curriculum documents; promoting vocational education; allocating funds for workshops and seminars; providing teachers with special salary packages; and integrating security, vocational, poverty alleviation, and environmental education into the primary school curriculum.
