Abstract
The study examined students’ entrepreneurship awareness and skill acquisition in tertiary institutions across Sokoto State, Nigeria. Specifically, it explored the extent of students’ awareness of entrepreneurship, the level of skills acquired, and the major factors that motivate them to participate in entrepreneurial activities. The research was guided by Human Capital Theory and employed a descriptive research design. From a total population of 10,019 students, a purposive sample of 368 was drawn from five tertiary institutions. Data were collected using a self-developed instrument titled Students’ Entrepreneurship Awareness and Skill Acquisition Questionnaire (SEASAQ), and analyzed with descriptive statistical techniques. Findings revealed that entrepreneurship awareness significantly enhanced students’ skill acquisition. The study also identified various challenges hindering effective skills acquisition. Counselling implications of the findings were discussed. It was recommended that students’ entrepreneurship awareness and skills development can be strengthened through the introduction of entrepreneurship courses in tertiary institutions in Sokoto State. Furthermore, government should adequately equip entrepreneurship education offices with the necessary human and material resources.
